Language Documentation Training Center Q&A

The mission of the LDTC is to train speakers of under-resourced languages to document their own languages. Since 2003, we've worked with speakers of over 130 languages to develop dictionaries, children's books, websites, videos, and other pedagogical resources. Over the course of ten weeks, participants eat delicious free food while taking part in lectures and activities that center around the following topics: introduction to language endangerment, documentation, revitalization, and reclamation; audio and video recording techniques; speech sounds, writing systems, and grammar; dictionary creation; specific pedagogical tools and softwares; ethnobotany; ... and more! We're gearing up for the Fall 2023 session of LDTC, and we're seeking both language consultants and language mentors (roles described below). Your commitment would consist of two hours a week for ten weeks. You will enjoy a catered dinner from DaSpot at each meeting, as well as a celebratory end-of-term banquet during which we share our projects with the wider community. Undergrads, graduate students, staff, faculty, UH affiliates, and community members are all warmly welcomed. 1. Language consultants: If you speak an under-documented language and would like to create language resources under the guidance of UH linguists, we'd love to hear from you. You do not have to be fluent or anywhere near fluent - just passionate about sharing your language and culture. You will be compensated for your time with a generous thank you gift. 2. Language mentors: If you are passionate about languages, anthropology, or cultural revival, you may be interested in learning about language documentation. No prior experience is required: we will teach you everything you need to know, and you will be working closely with graduate student linguists every step of the way.
