How to Start Beekeeping with Max Towey

February 5, 9:00am - 12:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Lyon Arboretum, 3860 Manoa Rd

Love bees? Love honey? In this class Max Towey of Meli: A Local Honey Company will cover the basics of getting an apiary started: the right types of equipment you will need, honeybee biology, pests and parasites, where and how to place hives. Max’s honey will be available to sample and for purchase.

We will be going into the hives at Lyon Arboretum for a live demonstration. If you have an allergy to bee venom, please bring the proper precautions (e.g., an epipen and be especially sure to follow the clothing guidelines below). Although safety equipment will be provided, some risk of stings will always be present when working with bees. Bee suits will be provided to borrow during the live demonstration. Class participants must wear covered shoes and long pants that cover from ankles to waist.

This class will consist of an indoor slide presentation and an outdoor portion to visit the hives.

COVID19 safety note: All attendees must be masked during the class. All attendees must use LumiSight UH to provide acceptable proof of full vaccination or a negative test that meets UH’s guidelines. See below for more information about our COVID-19 safety guidelines. Failure to comply will result in inability to attend the class, and a refund may not be issued.
