Climate Ambition, Harm Reduction, & the International Court of Justice

Pacific Islands are global leaders in addressing the climate crisis. Since 2019, the government of the Republic of Vanuatu has led an initiative to request an advisory opinion on climate change from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). On March 29, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Resolution co-sponsored by a coalition of 132 countries. This success was due largely to the diplomatic work of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Vanuatu to the United Nations, headed by H.E. Ambassador Odo Tevi. In this talk Ambassador Tevi will share his insights on the journey, identify the partners, the underlying legal and diplomatic strategies used, challenges, lessons learned and the voyage ahead. Richardson School of Law at the University of 51ÂÒÂ×»»ÆÞÊ»i at ²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹ and Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change.
