Community Dialogues, Of Spaceships, Sorcerers & Small Gods----------------- These are facilitated sessions where you can engage with peers from diverse backgrounds. LeGuin, author of the Earthsea cycle of books, "is probably the oldest literary device for talking about reality.ā€ In an age where the predominant anxieties appear to be about seemingly material, financial concerns, what, if any, is the value of fiction, to say nothing about more fantastic fiction about spaceships, monsters, and gods? This Community Dialogue invites participants to consider the value of fantasy in our everyday lives (or lack thereof).---------- Speaker: Ruizhi Choo is a graduate degree fellow with the East-West Center, and a PhD student with the Department of History at the UH ²ŃÄå²Ō“Ē²¹. Born and raised in Pek Kio, Singapore, he is the grandchild of Hokkien shopkeepers. His research interests lie at the intersections of modern Southeast Asian history, environmental history, and animal history. Before Honolulu, Ruizhi served as an associate research fellow at the S.Rajaratnam School of International Studies. He obtained his Masterā€™s degree from the National University of Singapore.
